Taliban Bombers Attack Air Base in Afghanistan

KABUL, Afghanistan — Taliban forces attacked a large coalition airfield in eastern Afghanistan early Sunday, detonating three car bombs near the entrance and engaging in a two-hour gun battle that killed nine insurgents, four Afghan guards and at least four civilians whose vehicle was caught in the cross-fire, Afghan officials and witnesses said.

Yesterday was Ashura day, when Shia Muslims commemorate the death of Imam Hussein. It is the holiest day in their calendar, and during the last decade Sunni extremists have marked it with suicide bombing attacks against the processions that are the culmination of the preceding monthMuharram. When I read of President Karzai's attendance at an Ashura ceremony in Kabul, after two suspected suicide bombers had been arrested, I remembered my own Afghan childhood.

They are brainwashed into waging Jihad on the West and becoming suicide bombers, the Sunday Mirror reported.

It was posted on an underground al Qaeda website and issued by the Turkistan Islamic Party, which trains fighters to fight alongside the Taliban in Afghanistan.
