Russia-U.S. Talk To Syria Opposition Saturday

The Forbes, 2 February 2013

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and U.S. VP Joe Biden will meet with Syrian opposition leaders on Saturday in Munich, a United Nations spokesman said on Friday.

“The Joint Special Representative for Syria, Lakhdar Brahimi, will meet this evening with Mouaz Alkhatib, a leader of the Syrian opposition, on the margins of a security conference in Munich,” Deputy Spokesperson for UN Secretary General Eduardo del Buey told Ria Novosti newswire in New York today.

Both are scheduled to have bilateral meetings with Biden and Lavrov.

Alkhatib, a leader of the National Coalition of Syrian Revolutionary and Opposition Forces (SNCROF), expressed his readiness this week to meet with Lavrov, Biden and Brahimi in Munich, prompting media rumors of a four-party meeting.

On Friday, the Russian Foreign Ministry denied any four-party meeting reports though the U.N. confirmed one was most definitely in the cards this weekend.

Syria has become part IV in the continuation of the Arab Spring uprisings that began in December 2010. The country has been marred by violence over the last year in a civil war with Bashar Al-Assad supporters on one side and opposition fighters on the other. The U.N. estimates that 60,000 people have been killed since March 2011 and more than 700,000 have been forced to leave the country due to the violence.
